Advantages
• Cosmetic results are generally pleasing. Skin transferred from the abdomen to the chest wall is
usually a good match in color and texture.
• A prosthesis is usually not required.
• A "tummy tuck" follows the transfer of skin and fat from the lower abdomen.
Disadvantages
• Possible weakness or hernia of the abdominal wall.
• Additional scars across the upper chest and lower abdomen.
• Involves a major, lengthy surgical procedure under general anesthesia.
• A plastic surgeon with microsurgery skills is required for the free flap technique.
• There may be a higher risk of complications.
